1. Exactly where are the villas Galle?
Villa Templeberg and Templeberg Bungalow are centrally located within 3km of Galle Fort, 5 km to Jungle Beach and 8km to Unawatuna. Perched on a hilltop next to the famous Kuduruduwa Temple, the villa is in close proximity to Akuressa Road and within 1km from the main Galle-Colombo Highway. The villa is the perfect spot to tour from with a number of easy day trips possible including a Mirissa Whale Watching Tour, a Yala Safari adventure or visit to Bawa’s Gardens near Bentota.
2. What can I expect from a villa stay in Galle?
Templeberg caters to holidaymakers who are attracted by the privacy, the boutique nature and charm of a resort style property, our personal hospitality services and the fact that a villa stay is unlike a hotel stay.
When spending time at Templeberg Villa Sri Lanker you get to experience life as a local with trips to nearby vegetable and fruit stalls, walks along laneways, and local bus trips in to town. Templeberg is also one of only a few staffed villas in Galle.
The villa and bungalow are a tranquil destination with the ‘Wow! Factor’ . The property reflects the epitome of tranquility and privacy. Ideal for moments in your life that are truly befitting something very special – be it an anniversary, milestone birthday, small wedding in Sri Lanka, a romantic getaway or your honeymoon.
3. What is the history of the house and bungalow?
The Villa history dates back to 1864, when the property was first established as a working coconut plantation. Some of the coconut trees on the property are more than one hundred years old.
The style and features of Villa Templeberg are typical of a Dutch and English Colonial architecture common throughout former Dutch and English colonies of South Africa, Sri Lanker, Guyana, Indonesia and India.
Unique features of the property include central wooden doors, gambrel roof, stonewall fences, hipped dormer windows, porches protected by flared eaves and wooden shutters.
The villa Galle is one of only three remaining original properties in the Kuduruduwa district.
Originally built as a colonial Manor home for a Singhalese family, the villa Templeberg was acquired by a German expatriate family in the 1960s which owned the villa for the most part of many years and who kept the Villa as their second home: wo ist Sri Lanka.
In 2013the Villa opened as rental accommodation.
4. Colombo to Galle Airport transfer service. Will I be met at the airport?
At booking if you require picking up from the Airport or anywhere else around Sri Lanka, the staff at Templeberg can arrange transport services.
Guests can be met at the airport and delivered directly to the Villa’s sweeping main entrance for a fee of US$100 payable as part of your booking arrangements. For this price you will be met at the airport, no matter the time, and transported in an air conditioned modern car or small mini van.
A return trip to and from Templeberg Villa (pick up and return) to the Airport is also available at US $200 per trip.
5. How many guests can stay at Templeberg?
The villa and bungalow can comfortably accomodate up to 11 adults, on a two adults per room basis.
There is one King Bed, four Queen Beds and two single beds. A bassinet and cot is also available on request.
The Bungalow/Cottage can accommodate 1 to 4 adults in its adjoining rooms with a shared bathroom.
6. Will there be other people sharing the villa?
Yes. Unless you opt for exclusivity and book out the entire property there may be other guests sharing Templeberg during your stay. If privacy and exclusivity is your preference, don’t be disappointed. Consider booking the Bungalow, or alternatively, let us know that you would like to take the entire Villa, and perhaps the entire site (the Villa and the Bungalow) as part of your booking. Additional guests who stay during an exclusive booking are required to pay a small surcharge to cover costs.
7. I only need one room for my stay in Galle. Can I book just one room at Templeberg?
Yes. You are able to book just one room at the regular couples’ rate in the main Villa. The villa can be yours for a day, a week, a month or more.
If you’re looking for a reasonably priced stay as compared to hotels in the Fort or inland in Galle then Templeberg Villa is perfect for rustic authentic accommodation.
Our Navy room is perfect to enjoy for a couple or single.
8. I would like two rooms, one double and one triple is this possible?
Yes. Our Saffron room can be configured into a triple and will be made up with a single and a Queen bed. There is an additional $40USD charge for a triple configuration. This room type can then be matched with either our Green or Navy room.
Another option is renting the Family Bungalow which can comfortably sleep 4 people and pairing that with our Green or Navy Room.
9. What is the difference between the family bungalow and a room in the main villa?
The two bedroom family bungalow is stand alone at the rear of the property. It has two large rooms with adjoining doors making it easy for parents to go between rooms. It is also perfect for friends travelling together who like to socialise in one room and then retire to a separate space to sleep. Both rooms share a bathroom at the back of the bungalow. It also comes with it’s own small terraced seating area at the front and the second room can also be set up as a lounge upon request.
A room in the main villa has its own ensuite and can either be King, Queen or Double.
10.What furnishings will I find at the villa?
The Villa is your home away from home. It is complete with European oven, western cooking utensils, crockery and a full sized kitchen so that meals can be made and taken in the villa.
All rooms have antique four poster beds, mosquito nets, writing desks, complete set of white towels, high thread count bed linen and local toiletries. To add to your stay you may wish to bring sunscreen and personal toiletries including mosquito repellant. Most items you desire can be purchased from local supermarkets on arrival.
Each of the bathrooms have recently been renovated and now include double wash basins, polished concrete, bamboo ladders and modern showering areas.
There are indoor and outdoor dining options as well as places near the pool to take your breakfast, lunch or dinner.
For children, we do have a single cot with detachable bassinet that can be booked for the length of your stay.
The adaptor Sri Lanka needed for the rooms is a 230 Volt. In Sri Lanka adaptors are called multi plugs and cost about 100LKR. Worldwide adaptors will work. Sri Lanka adaptors are usually the British two pin plugs in older style houses and the British 3 pin plugs in newer places.
11. What is the + symbolon Sri Lankan invoices and bills?
The plus sign symbol refers to the additional taxes and service charges of Sri Lankan hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfasts. One symbol represents a government surcharge. Two symbols represent a tax and service charge. Villa Templeberg’s prices include the tax. In terms of a service charge, Villa Templeberg prefers to recommend a tip be left for villa staff. We recommend between $5 and $10 USD per day, more for good service. The average salary per month in Sri Lanka in the hospitality industry is between $100 and $200USD per month so any tips make a difference to a hospitality staff’s salaries.
12. How do I pay for my stay at Templeberg Villa and when do I pay?
Templeberg Villa requires payment of a 50 percent deposit within 7 days of a booking request. Preferably, we will arrange the deposit at the time of booking.
Payments can be made via direct bank deposit or depositss under $1000 by paypal noting that the funds will be deposited into a Sri Lankan held account and must be in US$.
Transfers from other currencies may attract bank fees and charges.
Guests who prefer to pay using credit card can make payments in country at our local HSBC branch. Payments made via Paypal using credit cards generally attract a commission of 3.4% charged by PayPal.
The remaining 50% and any additional charges can be settled at check-out in either US or local currency.
Templeberg is also listed with a number of booking sites such as Agoda and hostelword. Generally if you are looking for a particular rate speak with us and we can tell you what is on offer at particular times of the year.
13. What time is check-in and check-out at Templeberg Plantation and is there any flexibility?
Check in time is 1PM local time.
Check out time is 11AM local time.
If you require late check-out, or early check-in, please let us know as part of your booking.
The Villa is able to stow your luggage securely on the day of your arrival and departure – avoiding the need for room charges.
Late check-out times (up until 6PM) and early check ins are subject to availability. A 9am check in and 6PM check out is assured when our guests pay a fee equal to 50% of the full-house published rate as part of their initial booking. For very late departures, (after 6PM) a fee of 75% of the published room rate is payable to enable you to comfortably prepare and pack for your journey.
Please note that a late check-out and early check in is subject to availability. We are keen to help make your last day a special one.
14. What are some of the services at Templeberg?
Templeberg is a staffed villas. The villa and bungalow comes complete with 10 full time staff.
Each staff member has different responsibilities; massage, cooking, cleaning, garden maintenance. It is one of few villas with chef close to the world heritage UNESCO Galle Fort.
Trixie is able to act as your private cook making delicious food combinations.
The villa has unlimited free wifi and free laundry services.
The villa has on top massage services performed by Achila and Thyronne. We can arrange for a meltingly good massage, a manicure/pedicare, therapeutic skin care, traditional Sri Lankan healing therapies and sublime spa experiences – delivered by expert and nurturing hands. Spa Treatments vary depending on the services and duration of the package however the starting price point is just US$20 per hour.
Sudu is able to collect fresh King coconut daily for guests from the plantation.
Bicycles can be arranged for a little activity or for something a bit more subdued and relaxed yoga or meditation on the lawn can be arranged
15. What is the villa’s ‘kitty’ system for food and alcohol?
Any guest can nominate an amount they wish to spend on food and alcohol and we can arrange to purchase any item from local supermarkets or markets.
We charge a small 10% fee of your total spend for arranging your food and alcohol. All guests are provided with copies of the receipts. Any money we don’t spend we give back to you.
16. Can the Villa play host to an event or special occassion in Sri Lanka?
Yes, if the event is a special occasion, and you are planning ahead to invite guests to a formal reception please discuss your needs at time of enquiring via our website.
The Villa can accommodate intimate weddings and special occasion celebrations – vows and civil ceremonies, commitment ceremonies, anniversaries, reunion, themed parties, pool side and garden banquets, business and organised events and big ‘0’ birthdays.
The best caterers, entertainment and florists can be arranged in advance and accommodation for your guests can be organised at Templeberg and other near by villas if necessary. For large occasions, we generally partner with a nearby associate estate, able to cater to large weddings and events of 100 guests or more.
We also have excellent relationships with in-country, UK expat and local Sri Lankan traditional wedding and event planners.
17. We’d like to help the local Sri Lankan Community. What can we do?
For guests who appreciate that Sri Lanka is a developing country, Villa Templeberg can arrange a visit to a Sri Lankan School ,which gladly receives donations of cash for school equipment.
If you have room in your luggage, the children appreciate colouring in books, felt tip pens, colouring pencils, text books and exercise books and other supplies.
The community initiative which the Villa affiliates itself with is the Tsunami Photo Museum nearby to Hikkaduwa. A tour of the photo museum can be arranged. In addition, the Villa is currently collecting money the photo museum’s behalf with a view to constructing a permanent museum.
We also encourage donations to the “I can Swim Can You’ Program www.icanswimcanyou.com which teaches Sri Lankan girls and women how to swim. 80% of Sri Lankan’s tsunami fatalities were as a result of girls and women not knowing how to float or swim in water.
18. What if I need to cancel or make a date change?
We are flexible with dates, however we do stress that changes to your reservation and cancellations affect us and other potential guests who’d like to visit Sri Lanka.
For this reason, we encourage you to include cancellation and date change coverage as part of any comprehensive travel insurance policy you may take out, so that circumstances outside of your control do not result in your deposit being forfeited and you and your party being left out of pocket.
Our booking partners such as Agoda, FlipKey etc display their cancellation policies which are non-negotiable.
In the event of a change of date, deposits and final payments are non-refundable, however, bookings can be moved out to a future point in time, anywhere within a 12 month span of the original booking date/s, subject to availability if booked direct through Templeberg.
The cancellation policy available on the Accomodation section of the site applies to full cancellations.
19. What forms of transportation are available at the villa?
Tuk tuk ( three wheeler vehicles) are easily arranged to ferry people to and from Galle and other destinations.
The locally set round trip price for three people is $1000 SLR.
For groups of 6 or more, we can also arrange car hire. The daily hire rate ranges from USD 30 -USD 50. Drivers are required to have an international drivers license.
It is also possible to hire a driver and van for USD 50 – USD 60 per day. Luxury driver and vehicle options start at USD 100 per day.
20. Where do I apply for my Sri Lankan Tourist visa?
You can apply for your visa upon arrival in the arrival halls of the airport.
Alternatively you can apply online for a visa at the Sri Lankan immigration department’s website.
